Not every good product can earn the title of best in class, but we've tested several other bags that get our thumbs up.
Osprey Ozone 40L for $280: At 4.47 pounds, Osprey claims this bag is the lightest carry-on suitcase. It's also made from bluesign approved 400D recycled nylon and is treated with DWR. This bag is light enough to easily hoist over my head and has also been checked several times.
Gregory Alpaca 40 Travel Bag for $140: This bag weighs just 2.7 pounds, but the water-resistant fabric and extraordinarily sturdy (albeit plastic) buckles make it a sturdy bag for adventure. There is an exterior pocket for storing dirty shoes or clothes. The backpack straps don't fold in for storage (you have to unclip them), but they are perhaps the most padded and comfortable straps I've encountered on a duffel bag. Exterior swags and an interior zippered pocket round out the impressive list of features.
Land's End Waxed Canvas Duffel Bag for $180: Most duffel bags these days are made of nylon, and while it's hard to call a material popular since the 1940s “modern,” nylon bags lack the old-school charm of this waxed canvas bag.
Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L for $149: This bag weighs 1 pound 13 ounces, which is barely heavier than air. It also features backpack straps that store in a front pocket.
Skyway Epic Carry-on Bag for $160: At 7.1 pounds, the Epic is a midweight. The handle is a little more finicky than our top pick, and the Travelpro's wheels glide a little smoother. Still, the Epic is a solid choice.
Target Signature Weekend Bag for $81: Resembling a cross between a gym bag and a handbag, the Weekender has a structure that product reviewer Louryn Strampe says can get too full, so keep that in mind if you plan to carry it around on a plane as hand luggage. However, she appreciates its durability and numerous internal pockets for organization, as well as its fairly long five-year warranty.
Plus Solgaard Cabin Closet for $345: It's a tiny a little above what most airlines list as maximum dimensions, but the difference is so small that it is accepted in 95% of cases. WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe praises its optional clip-on clothing organizer, which allows for efficient packing. The built-in TSA lock is easy to use and there is an internal external battery pocket. This suitcase is included in our Favorite recycled products guide.
Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-on Luggage for $200: This is a four-wheeled hardside carry-on luggage made from a durable polypropylene outer shell. Standout features include interior fabric made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and a “WetPak” storage pocket to keep wet items separate from the rest of your luggage.
Adidas Defender Duffel Bag for $40: If you're looking for a cheap duffle bag that can handle light travel, this is a good way to save $100. The fabric is noticeably thinner and less sturdy than the other duffel bags in this guide, and it lacks backpack straps. But to take it on the train or throw it in the trunk of a car, it will do the trick.
