In the oral history, DiMaggio explains that he struggled with his role on the show until he received some advice from some wise co-stars:
“I was like, 'I don't understand this show.' It wasn't coherent, it was difficult to follow the scripts. I felt like I was in the dark about a lot of things and uncomfortable as an actor when approaching the role. 've kind of made them aware, like, you know, “. Get over it, it will work. Dee Bradley Baker who was on the show was like, “Man, you just gotta get ready and do this thing and go home and cry in your money bag.” And then Tom Kenny said to me, “It's the 'yellow submarine' of this generation,” and I was like, “All right, let me give it up and take that advice.”
Baker, who voiced many characters on the show, including Cinnamon Bun and Fight King (and was the voice of the Olmecs in “Legends of the Hidden Temple”), gave some great advice, but Kenny's was better because he helped DiMaggio overcome his fears and embrace the show. That's probably advice that Kenny, who plays The Ice King on “Adventure Time,” probably had to give people on his own show, “SpongeBob SquarePants,” where he voiced the titular optimist inhabiting the pineapple with geometric shape underwear. After all, it was once one of the weirdest shows on television, but the big changes in “Adventure Time” and “SpongeBob” have paid off because kids love weird!
