After unveiling a new NX500 at EICMA last November, Honda finally confirmed the arrival of the mid-size adventure model in America. The 2024 Honda NX500 is now the successor to the CB500X, with ECU updates, lighter wheels, new suspension settings, improved technology and much more.
Like the CB500X, the new NX500 features a 471cc parallel-twin engine rated at 46.9 horsepower and 31.7 lb-ft of torque, delivering power through a slipper-assist clutch and 6-speed transmission . Many of the key features remain unchanged, such as the accessible seat height of 32.8 inches, as well as a short wheelbase of 56.8 inches for increased maneuverability.
New for 2024, Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) manages rear-wheel traction. The system compares front and rear wheel speeds to detect rear slip and, if necessary, Honda says it controls fuel injection to smoothly reduce torque. HSTC can also be completely disabled if the passenger wishes. Additionally, an ECU update improves acceleration and power delivery throughout the rev range, making it even more adaptable to a range of driving scenarios.
Acting as a stressed member, the engine complements the rigidity of the chassis with four suspensions on the cylinder head. Internally, the head uses roller rockers; Shim adjustment of the valves allows them to be lightweight, for lower load on the valve spring and reduced friction.
A silent cam chain (SV Chain) has the surface of its pins treated with Vanadium, reducing friction with increased protection against wear. The intake valve diameter is 26.0 mm, while the exhaust valve diameter is 21.5 mm.
The piston shape is carefully designed to reduce noise at high rpm. Friction is reduced by ridges on the piston skirt (a finish that increases surface area and introduces spaces into which oil can flow for better lubrication). The “triangular” proportion of the crankshaft, main shaft and intermediate shaft is effectively compact. The housings use thin-walled, centrifugal-cast sleeves; their internal design reduces pumping losses that can occur with a 180° phased firing order. A deep crankcase reduces oil movement during cornering and hard braking.
Chassis / Suspensions
Unchanged for the 2024 model year, the NX500 uses a 35mm diameter steel diamond tube main chassis, but the new model is slightly lighter, tipping the scales at a claimed curb weight of 432 pounds – 7 pounds lighter than the outgoing CB500X.
For bump absorption, the new bike uses a 41mm Showa Separate Function Large Piston (SFF-BP) inverted fork with 5.2 inches of travel. By dividing the functions (Big Piston pressure separation damper in one leg, spring mechanism in the other), response and ride quality are optimized.
The monotube shock, with 5.3 inches of axle travel and five-stage preload adjustment, features new front-friendly settings, and its large-diameter piston provides optimal temperature management. Constructed from 2mm steel, the swingarm uses a hollow crossmember that is rotationally rigid and laterally flexible to optimize handling.
Dual 296mm petal-type front discs and axially mounted two-piston Nissin calipers are standard. The pressure required on the lever when braking is minimized, but the small disc size keeps weight to a minimum. The single rear brake has a 240mm rotor.
Also updated for the new model, the 19/17-inch cast aluminum wheels are completely new. Switching from a conventional 7-spoke Y-shaped design to 5-spoke Y-shaped saves 28.2 ounces in the front and 24.7 ounces in the rear. This reduction in unsprung weight works with revised suspension settings to improve handling and feel in all situations.
New TFT and lighting
An all-new 5-inch color TFT screen, inherited from the XL750 Transalp, uses optical linking to improve visibility in direct sunlight – a first for a Honda motorcycle. By sealing the gap between the cover glass and the TFT screen with resin, glare is reduced and backlight transmission improved. It is customizable between Bar, Circle and Simple display models.
The left thumb switches have also undergone a transformation, becoming simpler and backlit for nighttime use. These improvements make it easier for drivers to control various functions and settings, providing an improved user experience.
A new LED headlight design maintains beam penetration but delivers a wider light distribution for increased visibility at night. It is paired with a new LED taillight, and all other lighting is LED as well.
New style
Another notable change in the transition from the old CB500X to the NX500 is the new adventure styling of the bike. The NX500 benefits from improved aerodynamics, which not only gives the bike a more modern look, but also contributes to its overall stability at high speeds, according to Honda.
Model highlights
- Overall weight is reduced by 7 pounds, from 439 pounds to 432 pounds.
- An ECU update improves acceleration feel.
- Honda Selectable Torque Control is now standard.
- The new wheels save 3.3 pounds of unsprung weight.
- New suspension settings for the single shock and 41mm Showa SFF-BP inverted fork.
- The all-new LED headlight improves nighttime visibility.
- New 5-inch TFT display driven by a simplified, backlit four-way toggle switch.
Pricing and availability
The 2024 NX500 is currently available at an MSRP of $7,399, which is $100 more than the outgoing CB500X model. Unlike the UK which gets the new bike in three different colors, America only gets the bike in Black Metallic.
