When we're not outdoors, we get our adventure fix by exploring social media and the web. Here are some of the best adventure links we discovered this week.
Alone on the Ocean: Cole Brauer is currently second in the Global Solo Challenge. A few days before the finish line, the youngest competitor in the race is one of eight competitors remaining out of 16 at the start.
If she finishes, Brauer will likely set a speed record for her class of boat and become the first American woman to complete a round-the-world race under sail. She has amassed 400,000 followers on social media and wants to change the face of professional ocean sailing.
The Wild West of Nepal: Matt Glenn writes about his expedition to Nepal in 2023 with Hamish Frost, Paul Ramadan and Tim Miller. The team split into two pairs, each with a different objective.
Glenn and Frost were aiming for the North face of Bobaye. They set about scouting the line, but Glenn was having trouble breathing and couldn't keep up with Frost. They returned to base camp to rest.
A few days later, they returned to the face and climbed for a day, building a ledge on a snowy slope to camp overnight. A few hours later, their tent had half collapsed. Trapped in the sea spray, they had to dig to get out.
Why hasn't anyone repeated Hummingbird Ridge?
Is Hummingbird Ridge the hardest classic climb? : Since its first ascent in 1965, no one has repeated the original line on Hummingbird Ridge. First climbed by Dick Long and Allen Steck, it was actually a consolation prize. They wanted to open a new ridge on Denali, but they were defeated there. Despite this, Hummingbird Ridge's reputation has only grown over the years.
Orcas investigate kayakers: A group of sea kayakers filmed two orcas swimming around their boats. The killer whales come out of the water right next to them.
I selected the trail on Google Maps: Last year, Ian Snyder fell 300m while hiking in Hawaii. He was on the Koolau Summit Trail when he fell and was stranded for three days at the base of a waterfall. A year later, he still has vision problems and has not regained his full strength.
Snyder released a video talking about his fall and what he did wrong. The biggest mistake was just following a Google Maps trail without any additional research. His second mistake was not telling his family where he was going.
No pets while climbing
Why animals have no place at the Crag: Years ago, James Lucas took his dog Wesley to Buttermilk Boulders. He would climb and the dog would run, fight with other dogs or sleep underneath. At the time, Lucas thought taking his dog to the rock was a no-brainer.
But over the years, he's seen more and more people bring their pets to increasingly popular rocks. Pets get in the way, can get lost, and distract their owners at times when they can't afford to be distracted.
A delicate line: Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world. Anna Tybor wants to become the first woman to climb the summit and then ski down without oxygen.
Tybor climbs with three friends but everything is more difficult than expected. Tybor is plagued by doubt but must trust his instincts. In the end, she climbs the summit without oxygen and skis back down, although it is not as she had initially planned.
What kills people in national parks: Every year, more than 240 people die in America's national parks. That equates to less than a one in a million chance, but for some, it paints a picture of parks being far more dangerous than they actually are.
The National Park Service looked back through 17 years of deaths to see what led to these deaths. The primary cause was drowning, and many of them were boaters who were not wearing life jackets.
