MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FLA. (WSVN) – As the summer travel season approaches, airport officials want to share some travel tips as airports expect an increase in passengers.
Travelers like David Allen are starting to think about their summer getaway.
“I have a lot of family on the East Coast, so maybe New York would be fun, but maybe also somewhere in the Caribbean, maybe the Bahamas,” Allen said.
Millions of Americans are expected to pack their bags and leave this Memorial Day weekend. Brad Summer is traveling to Israel.
“I have a child who graduated from medical school there. A good friend’s wedding should be a lot of fun,” he said.
According to the American Automobile Association, this year, air travel is seeing the biggest increase since 2005, which means it's a good idea to pack your bags and plan now.
TSA officials on Wednesday displayed some items that had been handed over to security checkpoints at Miami International Airport over the years.
Some items clearly should have stayed at home, others weren't so obvious.
“It’s a question that people don’t pay attention to either. This is called a credit card knife. said Mark Howell, regional spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.
Howell also warns travelers to be careful with their weapons when going through security.
“We have more than double the number of guns year to date compared to last year,” he said.
A packing tip for travelers is to start with an empty bag, so they aren't surprised when they arrive at TSA security checkpoints.
Long security lines have been a problem in the past, especially on holiday weekends. However, MIA is ready to accommodate the increase in travelers with a little more staff, but they need your help to keep everything running.
A simple rule: “Arrive at the airport two hours early,” Howell said.
Whether you're staying in the United States or going abroad, stay safe and travel smart.
