As spring break approaches, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for one of the busiest travel seasons of the year, which runs from March 7-25. TSA Administrator David Pekoske announced, “TSA screened a record number of passengers in strives to ensure that each passenger's journey begins as smoothly as possible.
Pack wisely with the 3-1-1 rule
To get your vacation off to a smooth start, it is recommended to start with an empty suitcase to avoid inadvertently packing prohibited items. For those heading to sunny beaches, it's important to remember that liquids, including sunscreen and alcoholic beverages larger than 3.4 ounces, must be placed in checked baggage. However, carry-on baggage may include liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes, as long as they weigh 3.4 ounces or less and are contained in a one-liter bag, with a limit of 'one of these bags per traveler. Additionally, firearms must be unloaded, secured in a locked, hard container, and declared to the airline during check-in to avoid penalties and delays at security checkpoints. For a complete list of what can and cannot be brought to TSA checkpoints, travelers are encouraged to consult “TSA.What can I bring?” online resource.
Checkpoint preparation and identification requirements
Being prepared at the security checkpoint is crucial for a smooth experience. Travelers must have their boarding pass, mobile or printed, and valid identification ready for inspection. TSA's Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) units, including enhanced CAT-2 systems with optional facial recognition, are deployed at nearly 30 airports to streamline the identity verification process. However, those who are not comfortable with photo capture can opt for manual ID verification. It's also worth noting that starting May 7, 2025, travelers aged 18 and over will need a REAL ID-compliant license or other approved form of identification for domestic flights, which makes this a good time to update your ID through your state's DMV. For a faster screening experience, sign up for TSA PreCheck® is recommended, providing expedited security checks and a more convenient travel experience.
Arrive early and be patient
Given the expected increase in travel volume, it is essential to account for additional travel time due to potential delays, such as traffic and check-in queues. The airport experience can be hectic, especially during peak seasons, and being patient is key to ensuring a smoother journey for everyone. For travelers with disabilities or medical conditions requiring special assistance, TSA Cares offers a helpline to discuss screening procedures or arrange assistance at the checkpoint if contacted at least 72 hours before travel. Additionally, TSA encourages travelers to ask questions through various platforms, including AskTSA on X and Facebook Messenger, emphasizing the importance of vigilance with its “If You See Something, Say Something®” campaign. International travelers are also reminded to check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection “Know Before You Go” page for essential document requirements.
As travelers prepare for their spring break adventures, following TSA advice can significantly improve the airport security experience. With careful planning, a little patience, and following TSA recommendations, embarking on your vacation can be as enjoyable as the destination itself. This season, let's incorporate travel into the joys of spring break, ensuring memorable trips from start to finish.
