This week in travel news: Why going on vacation might be better than using eye cream, how a hippo became the internet's hottest influencer, and buying a boat Cruising on Craigslist has become a dark dream.
It's no secret that traveling is fun. What if it could also make you look and feel younger?
A new study from Australia's Edith Cowan University shows that entropy – the process of slow, inevitable decline – can be offset by travel.
According to the study, many aspects of travel – such as meeting new people, sleeping better, having new life experiences and taking part in relaxing activities like yoga and spa treatments – could help challenge premature aging.
“Tourism is not just about leisure and recreation,” said Fangli Hu, lead author of the study. “It could also help people’s physical and mental health.”
Now all you have to do is convince your boss that you need more vacation days.
Chris Willson made a life-changing decision in 2008 when he purchased a cruise ship on Craigslist and embarked on a years-long project to restore the 293-foot vessel.
Willson says he invested all his savings into this passion project, but in the end, it seems it wasn't enough to save the ship. Discover how his dream collapsed and why he “never had a single regret”.
This week, the animals were as much on the move as their human counterparts.
The hoiho, or yellow-eyed penguin, was crowned New Zealand Bird of the Year. The annual competition highlights the country's endangered species. Last year's winner was a bird that eats its own vomit.
Furthermore, an African penguin named Pen found himself in a frightening situation: the six-year-old child, born and raised in captivity, was washed into the sea in Japan on August 25. Her guardian feared the worst, but Pen was found safe two weeks later.
She's not the only animal in Asia to go viral. Baby pygmy hippo Moo Deng (“inflatable pig”) has become a celebrity thanks to the cute faces she makes. However, fame can have downsides. Some visitors to her zoo in Thailand have become nuisances when they try to meet her.
