SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – American Airlines' technology issues early on Christmas Eve present the worst nightmare for people traveling to see family and friends this holiday season: delays and cancellations.
The airline resolved the problem within hours of the problem, with the FAA lifting the nationwide ground shutdown Tuesday morning.
But whether it's faulty technology, bad weather or other issues, travelers should always prepare for mishaps at the airport.
Melissa Sutton of Up 'N Away Travels said if this happens to you, be sure to clear your plans with your airline before leaving the airport or trying to switch to another carrier.
“If this happens to you, always check the airline app, check the airline website, check your flight schedules,” Sutton said. “If you've used a travel agent, which I hope you have, they will have provided you with a 24-hour emergency telephone number. Call them, see if they can help you. If you're at the airport, don't leave. Stay there. »
The assistance available from the airline depends on the airline you are traveling with and the airport you are at. Each airport is equipped with different staff to help you adjust your plans if necessary.
“If you're at a major airport, all airlines have customer service desks. If you're at a smaller airport, like Sioux Falls, go directly to your gate agent and simply say, “Here's what's happening.” How can you help me? This is again where the “be kind” principle comes in, Sutton said.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has implemented new rules that airlines must follow if delays and cancellations are their fault. Sutton said that resources are also important to have on hand.
Sutton said in the end, all that matters is that you get to your destination. If that means plans have to change for that to happen, so be it. Just be prepared to adapt.
“As long as you're moving and you're on a plane and you're leaving, the little things don't matter. Don't let them scare you. If you find yourself coaching instead of comfort, that’s okay. If you end up connecting through Detroit instead of Dallas, that's no problem. Just get where you need to be,” Sutton said.
Sutton said the most important thing to remember is that when working with airport or airline staff, be kind. Often these issues are also beyond their control, and being patient will take you far.
