In 2024, travel is going through a major shift, especially within the Black community. More and more Black travelers are going off the beaten path, exploring hidden treasures across the world and rewrite the narrative of global adventure.
This movement is not only about discovering new places, but also about personal growth. It is an opportunity to connect with unfamiliar cultures and communities and embrace the full range of global diversity.
The Transformative Power of Hidden Treasures
Black travelers bring a diverse set of perspectives and viewpoints to their travels. For many, exploring lesser-known destinations is a way to break free from stereotypes and showcase diversity within the Black community. By venturing to places like Conkouati-Douli National Park in Congothe fjords of Norway or the deserts of Mongolia, black travelers are actively engaging with the world in bold and meaningful ways.
Jessica Nabongo, a renowned photographer and travel writer, is one such pioneer. travel through South Sudanone of the least visited places in Africa, is a living image of her adventurous spirit. “A friend of a friend put me in touch with some locals and we went to a cattle camp for hours,” she shared with Flash Pack“It was wonderful because cattle are very important to the Dinka people, and I got to see how they organize their movements with the cows. It was funny because I asked a man what my dowry would be, and he said, ‘30 cows at the most,’ which is not a lot. Even though I am 1.70m tall, in South Sudan I am very small.”
Exploring hidden gems can lead to greater cultural understanding. For Nabongo, South Sudan’s turbulent history didn’t stop her from exploring the country. “I’m very curious and I really enjoy new experiences, so I just wanted to see what they were like,” she told Flash Pack. “I try to go to places with an open mind. There weren’t any that I was afraid to visit because I’m not afraid of people, most people are nice. No country in the world is completely safe or dangerous.”
