KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If you're planning a last-minute trip to New York to cheer on the Royals, we've got tips on traveling, where to stay and what it will all cost.
“Luckily, New York has three different airports you can fly into: LaGuardia, JFK and then Newark,” said Brent Blake, president of Ascendis Travel. “So there's plenty of airspace to get to the game. And then again, New York is so big you have a lot of choices when it comes to hotels.”
Return flights: Last minute bookings may be limited, depending on the airline, from KCI to LaGuardia International or John F. Kennedy International Airports in New York.
Nonstop flights last about three hours, but layovers can extend your travel time by up to five to six hours.
Travel tips: Consider flying to Newark, although the drive to the city is slightly longer. Be sure to compare prices at all three airports to get the best deal.
“When I looked at prices, airfares start around $700 and can easily go up to $1,100, depending on the flights,” Blake said. “And so hotels start at $200 to $250. So there's a lot of space available. You just have to be willing to pay the price.”
Hotel recommendations: Expect average prices of $200 to $400 per night for a hotel room near Yankee Stadium. If you're looking for something more affordable, hotels in Jersey City or Long Island may be less expensive.
“Typically what we find is staying between 10 and 20 miles from the stadium, and that allows you to get a little different price,” he said.
New York City's public transportation system could save you money without sacrificing convenience. Staying outside of Manhattan, in Brooklyn or Jersey City, could save you money without sacrificing convenience.
Blake stressed the importance of planning as early as possible.
“The main thing is to be flexible,” Blake said. “If you need to be flexible to maybe stay further away from the stadium or take another flight and maybe make connections rather than non-stop connections. Most sports fans know that you have to be flexible to get the best offer.”
