- Matt Berna of Intrepid Travel said younger travelers are looking for immersive and unique experiences.
- Some are abandoning popular tourist spots in favor of what are called “destination dupes.”
- Book a vacation to Seoul instead of Tokyo, for example.
Millennial and Gen Z travelers have moved beyond the tourist traps.
Matt Berna, the president of Intrepid journeya small group travel agency, told Business Insider that his company had seen a shift away from popular destinations among tourists aged 18 to 35.
According to Berna, younger travelers are not bogged down by the FOMO – or “fear of missing out” – that has influenced older generations. Rather, they want to set the tone.
“They want to be pioneers and go to the next cool place,” he said.
This is why more and more young people are booking the so-called “destination dupes“, alternative vacation spots, more affordable and less crowded than known places.
Intrepid Travel has put together a list of dupe destinations travelers should consider this year.
