Night trains are growing in popularity as a less stressful and more sustainable means of transportation than flying.
But their often high prices continue to make this option unaffordable for many travelers.
Italy is launching two new routes this summer that it hopes will offer cost-effective alternatives.
The trains will carry passengers from Milan in the north to Lecce in southern Puglia or Reggio di Calabria in Calabria. Just be aware of the trap.
New night trains will travel throughout Italy this summer
Italian public operator Trenitalia will offer two new high-speed Frecciarossa services from mid-June.
The Milano Centrale in Lecce at night form will take just over nine hours, with a departure at 10:45 p.m. and an arrival at 7:57 a.m.
The train stops in Milano Rogoredo, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna Centrale, Foggia, Barletta, Bari Centrale, Monopoli, Fasano, Ostuni and Brindisi.
The return trip leaves Lecce at 9:05 p.m. and arrives in Milano Centrale at 7:35 a.m.
The service starts on June 21 and operates on Fridays and Saturdays.
There are already two IntercityNotte sleeper trains who travel the same route. But the new Frecciarossa train is several hours faster and about half the price: tickets start from €29.90 one way.
Another night service will begin on June 21 and will connect Milan Centrale with Reggio Calabria, in the southwest Calabria region.
It will take almost 11 hours, with a departure at 9:20 p.m. and an arrival at 8:11 a.m. THE form stopovers in Milano Rogoredo, Reggio Emilia, Bologna Centrale, Firenze SM Novella, Paola, Lamezia Terme Centrale, Rosarno and Villa S. Giovanni.
There is currently no live night Train which runs this route, although there is a similar Frecciarossa which runs during the day. Prices start at €39.90.
So what's the problem ?
THE prices It sounds dreamy, but there is a problem.
There are no berths or cabins on the form so you will be sitting upright during the entire journey. There is also no dining car, but there is a bar offering snacks, sandwiches and drinks.
You can, however, choose Business class which offers more comfortable and larger seats, free Wi-Fi and free snacks from €44.90 on the Milan-Lecce route and €54.90 on the Milan route -Reggio di Calabria.
