London has a lot to offer visitors – and we don’t just mean Big Benthe Shard and Tower Bridge.
In fact, you'll experience much of the city's vibrant culture away from these star players and instead when you turn towards more spots under the radar.
So much, this one London Gallery has been named “the most hidden tourist gem” in the world. High praise indeed.
In this list of hidden gems, compiled by airline Wizz Air, the Wallace Collection in Marylebone took first place.
To compile this list, the airline looked at Wikipedia's “Most Visited Cities” and TripAdvisor's “Travelers Choice: Best of the Best Destinations” lists.
It then analyzed a city's attractions with the highest number of “hidden gem” mentions, ranking them by their percentage of “Excellent” or “Very Good” reviews. Pretty comprehensive stuff.
Nonetheless, the Wallace Collection took home the winning spot, with 6,598 user reviews, including 551 mentioning the location as a “hidden gem,” plus a solid 4.5 TripAdvisor rating.
What is the Wallace Collection?
For those unfamiliar with the art gallery, it houses a multitude of wonderful artworks and objects including paintings, sculptures, ceramics and furniture. Inside, you'll find everything from 18th-century French paintings to Renaissance objects.
The gallery houses some of the most important art and decorative art collections in the world, around 5,500 works to be exact. No wonder it has been called a “hidden gem”. The Guardian even called it “one of the sexiest collections in Europe”.
The building itself is known as Hertford House, in Manchester Square, and is the former home of Sir Richard and Lady Wallace.
