Fans of Outer Banks should prepare to embark on a new adventure.
In the first look at the Netflix series' fourth season, the Pogues revel in their recent discoveries, with John B. (Chase Stokes) opens the teaser by saying, “We finally did it. We finally struck gold.”
“That's where the story should have ended, but it was really just the beginning,” he hears her say on clips of John B., Sarah ( Madeleine Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Pope (Jonathan Davis), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) around the North Carolina Islands.
The new teaser follows the Season 3 finale which featured an 18-month time jump revealing that the group of friends had discovered Blackbeard's gold. However, new episodes will take audiences back in time, leading up to Wes Genrette's (David Jensen) proposal to the Pogues to find Blackbeard's treasure.
The Pogues return to the OBX from El Dorado and embark on a “normal” life after building their own “safe haven.” They call it “Poguelandia 2.0,” where the group lives together and runs a successful bait, tackle and charter shop, according to Netflix’s press release.
But they face some financial difficulties, which prompts Wes to propose to his friends that they embark on a new adventure, which could lead them to make new dangerous enemies, also in search of the treasure. “Meanwhile, their problems only worsen and they are forced to question their past, present and future: who they really are, was it all worth it and how far are they willing to risk?” the press release reads.
Stokes, 31, spoke to PEOPLE in April about what will happen to his and Cline's characters. After the shocking deaths of John B. and Sarah's fathers — Big John (Charles Halford) and Ward Cameron (Charles Esten), respectively — at the end of season 3, during their mission to El Dorado, the on-screen couple faces the ramifications of these traumatic events.
“Any time you experience loss, it hits you in spaces and places that you didn’t anticipate,” he told PEOPLE. “Being in the situation that John B. and Sarah are in really forces them to evaluate everything.”
Co-showrunner Josh Pate also teased Tudum that the upcoming season will feature several flashbacks to fill in the gaps of the 18-month time jump.
“We felt like we needed to get them out of school,” he explained. “We thought of the first three seasons as a trilogy, and then we started over with a different kind of trilogy. We just needed to sort it out. We're going to have new villains, a new treasure hunt, a new living situation.”
