Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson) set sail for another journey in Moana 2—and the first trailer has just arrived. In the sequel to Disney's 2016 hit, the young heroine receives an unexpected call from orienteering ancestors to go on a quest. Joined by Maui and a new crew, she sets sail to the distant seas of Oceania to discover a new mystery.
Here's the first trailer, reintroducing us to Moana of Montunui and her demigod best friend Maui, as well as more glimpses of new and familiar faces.
Moana 2, directed by Dave Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand, was originally intended to be a series on Disney+. So it's a great sign that instead, it's being released as a feature film in theaters this Thanksgiving. Replaces Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana, Encanto) on music, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear join Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina from the first film's musical team. Moana is also receiving a live-action adaptation, also starring Johnson, as he has signed on to play Maui in every incarnation of the character at Disney Studios. It is due July 10, 2026.
But first: an animated sequel Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27. Are you looking forward to finding out?
