The most searched destinations in 2024, according to Google

The annual Google Year in Search has just been published, covering the main sportynews and pop culture trends of 2024. With more than 8.5 billion searches per day, Google has plenty of data on what people are searching for on the internet, including the top trending travel destinations of 2024.

Published on December 10, 2024, the Google Year in Search report ranks the most “trending” searches of this year, that is to say the queries which have experienced a sharp increase in traffic over a sustained period in 2024 compared to 2023. For travel, these results reflect the destinations which have seen a surge in interest over the past year, a useful data point to keep in mind when planning your trip (which you were hoping avoid crowds or join them).

According to US research data shared with Condé Nast Traveler, top trending queries for travel destinations in 2024 are Gili Islands In Indonesia. The pristine archipelago made up of three small islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air – is located off the coast of LombokBali's more laid-back neighbor.

Three American cities were also in the top 10: Washington DC, Miamiand Asheville, a bustling North Carolina mountain town with a rich arts and food scene currently recovering from Hurricane Helene. Banffanother mountain destination in CanadaThe province of Alberta came in sixth place.

Capital of the Netherlands Amsterdam was the only one European city which was on the shortlist of searches in the United States, supporting the trend of travelers flock to cooler destinations in Europe in a context of rising temperatures and increasing summer attendance in southern Europe.

The rest of the top 10 returned to island getawaysincluding American Samoa, a U.S. territory that includes seven South Pacific nearby islands and atolls Fiji; THE Canary Islandsa Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwest Africa, the Portuguese archipelago the Azores; And Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean.
