Happy Birthday, America! The United States turns 248 this month, and I am grateful to be able to call it home, especially in Atascadero. We have a great community and a small-town feel that no other city has. And we have the only AZA accredited zoo on the Central Coast! More information coming soon.
So, let’s celebrate this anniversary in style with the Atascadero 4th of July Music Festival at Atascadero Lake Park from 4-8pm. There will be boating, bounce houses, games, food and of course, music. Bring your chair, blanket and dancing shoes as we sit under the beautiful oak trees and celebrate Independence Day.
Summer and the Charles Paddock Zoo go hand in hand, especially when it includes ice cream. The Zoofari Ice Cream at the Charles Paddock Zoo on July 13 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. features a wide variety of all-you-can-eat treats and great family memories. Take your family on a stroll through the zoo, eat ice cream, and marvel at the more than 200 animals our zoo is home to. Instead of going to Madagascar this summer, come to the zoo and see the largest carnivore on the island of Madagascar, the fossa, which is new to our zoo because the previous fossa passed away of old age. Of course, Menderu, the endangered Malayan tiger, is always a crowd favorite.
This month there are three Summers in the Park concerts on Saturdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on July 6, 20 and 27. Come relax, grab a bite to eat and maybe dance. It's the perfect place to meet your friends and party without having to party at home. I say it's a win-win!
Summer is also a time for adventure. A-Town Chop Shop is an axe throwing parlor and social club with music, a funky vibe, and rustic decor. Whether it’s a date night, a night out with friends, or a casual night out, axe throwing in downtown Atascadero is a lot of fun. Are you up for a little friendly competition?
Many of you enjoy getting outside in the summer, and with the long daylight hours, Atascadero has some great hiking trails. Just outside of downtown is Stadium Park, and I’m not going to lie: this one is tough if you plan on going to the top. The views are incredible, though, and there’s some local history tied to it. Stadium Park was where early settlers of Tent City would go for community events, including church. The Three Bridges Trail is another hike with great views, but if you’re like me, I prefer the walk around Lake Park, or the Jim Green Trail, if I’m feeling energetic. I’m not a big hiker, but I appreciate the beauty of Atascadero.
Another beautiful July celebrating Independence Day and this wonderful city we live in. Although it is a little warm for this time of year, I am grateful that my parents chose to live in Atascadero 40 years ago.
