May 18 (UPI) — The State Department warns Americans traveling abroad of “the risk of terrorist attacks, protests, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.”
THE global alert issued Friday warns of the potential for violence against LGBTQ+ people.
“Due to the risk of terrorist attacks, protests, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased caution,” reads on in the State Department alert.
“The Department of State is aware of the increased potential for violence inspired by foreign terrorist organizations against LGBTQI+ people and events and advises U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased caution.”
It warns Americans abroad to remain vigilant in places frequented by tourists, “including Pride celebrations and places frequented by LGBTQI+ people.”
The alert is believed to be a response to threats made by ISIS militants against Pride events expected to take place in parts of Europe, CBS News reported: citing several sources with knowledge of the situation.
Pride month takes place in June.
U.S. diplomats were also ordered to email the travel warning to all Americans who have registered with the State Department abroad. POLITICO reported, citing official sources.
The news comes after the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken Friday marked the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia.
