WalletHub checked out the cheapest, easy-to-reach U.S. destinations and analyzed 100 of the largest metropolitan areas across 41 key metrics ranging from the cheapest flight and average price of a meal for two to the number of attractions available.
The outlet then compared 100 of the most populated metro areas in six categories, including travel costs, local costs, attractions, weather, activities and safety.
WaletHub's top three summer travel destinations for 2024 are:
Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta is considered the top destination because flights to the city from other major cities do not require a connection and typically cost less than $300.
The city is also full of shopping malls, parks, swimming pools and ice cream parlors, as well as one of the country's latest “last call” times, at 4 a.m., for those who like to relax and take a moment. far from the daily grind.
Washington, D.C.
The Washington, DC metro area is ranked as the second best summer travel destination because the city is not only full of affordable restaurants rated at least 4.5 on Yelp, but its many landmarks and museums will make the trip memorable for both casual and history buffs.
With one of the lowest crime rates in the country, the city is also one of the safest to travel to.
Orlando Florida
Known for its enormous theme parks, the Third City also offers reasonably affordable hotel accommodations.
From high-quality restaurants and water parks to ice cream parlors, boat tours and spas, Orlando is a family-friendly destination with plenty of things to do for both thrill-seekers and relaxation seekers.
New York City
Surrounded by New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the region ranks 12th on the list.
Coming in second in terms of attractions, the city has everything from high-end to low-end dining, museums, architecture, history, and more shopping than most can handle.
A trip to the Big Apple costs more than other destinations, so plan ahead for discounts and booking deals.
