Calling all Oklahomans!
If you're planning to travel abroad this year, the first item on your checklist should be your passport. The A US Department of State have faced significant backlogs and delays in passport processing in 2023, leaving many travelers frustrated.
In this new year, it's time to plan ahead so you don't get stuck. My office is here to help you through the confusing process of the passport system with some tips and best practices.
Before planning your trip outside the country, take a moment to check your passport's expiration date. If it is almost expired or within six months of your travel date, allow time to request a renewal.
To be allowed entry into most countries, your passport cannot expire within six months of your arrival. Although the processing time for new passports and renewals has improved, the standard wait time remains an average of six to eight weeks.
The expedited version is available for an additional cost of $60, typically reducing the wait time to two to three weeks.
When applying for passport renewal, stay informed of processing times. The Department of State website (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/processing-times.html) provides real-time updates on routine and expedited processing.
This can save you time and stress.
In case of emergency or urgent circumstances, you can call the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-877-487-2778 to make an appointment in person before your trip. Please note, these appointments are limited, so act quickly.
NPIC is also your go-to for updating applications or processing upgrades: they are here to help.
Although we cannot guarantee a certain outcome, my office is committed to helping you navigate the passport process.
If you experience any issues or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 405-300-6890 or submit a required privacy waiver form online here: https://bice.house.gov/services/help-federal-agency. We can contact the department on your behalf and provide you with a status update. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or a new applicant, good planning and attention to detail will help you obtain or renew your passport smoothly.
Travel safely!
