Although traveling opens the mind and heart to new experiences, it is crucial to be aware of the potential dangers in certain places. The US State Department regularly updates its travel advisories for more than 200 countries around the world, according to several risk indicators. These risk factors include crime, social instability and terrorism. From January 2024, level 4 “Do not travel” notice are in force in 19 countries, including the following.
1. Myanmar (Burma)
Most countries in Southeast Asia are considered safe and welcoming, with the notable exception of Myanmar, also known as Burma. The government faces constant challenges. Potential illegal detentions, civil unrest and limited medical resources are among the main reasons the U.S. State Department advises against travel to Myanmar.
2. Belarus
Travelers should exercise caution in some European destinations, despite the continent's reputation as a safe haven, according to the U.S. State Department. Belarus is one of these places. Given the close ties between Belarus and Russia, this warning is the result of political tensions and the fallout from the war between Russia and Ukraine.
3. Russia
Despite Russia's continued appeal as a tourist destination, the country is currently off limits due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Limited assistance with illegal detentions, special screening of U.S. passport holders, and limited flight alternatives are some of the reasons the U.S. State Department is warning against travel to Russia.
4. Mexico
Millions of people travel to Mexico each year and each state has a different level of travel warning. Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas are the six states out of thirty-two classified as level 4. The main risk factors across the country are kidnapping and crime.
5. Venezuela
Alongside a political crisis that began in 2014, Venezuela also faces human rights violations and a lack of health care. The United States Embassy in Caracas saw its diplomatic staff removed from their posts in 2019. Crime, social instability, kidnappings, unjustified incarceration and inadequate health infrastructure are among the dangers facing the nation is facing.
