Food and travel are closely linked. Personally, I travel to eat. I love nothing more than visiting new places to try unique flavors and dishes. But of course, not every meal can be remarkable. So editor u/BornThought4074 request, “Which country Who had better food than you expected, and who had worse food than you expected? » Here's what people said.
.“Turkish food was amazing, especially the Turkish breakfasts. They were always these huge feasts of lots of small plates including fresh bread, pastries, cheese, cold cuts, fruit, olives, hummus and the best fresh honeycomb I have ever tasted.”
.“Amalfi, Italy. When I went to the Amalfi Coast, I expected the food to be okay given the touristy nature of the area. In reality, it blew me away. Everything we ate was great fresh and always simply delicious.”
.“The food in Switzerland was not good at all. We really tried to find the best places and did our research before each meal. Despite this, all the food we ate was ok at best. But the view does not disappoint!”
.“Cambodia is unfortunately on my list of bad foods. I was expecting bright, fresh flavors like Vietnamese food, but most things tasted bland.”
.“Sri Lanka! The food blew me away. I've never had a bad dish on a trip there. It's been six years since I last visited this country, and years later I “I still dream about some of the things I ate. The curries were so tasty.”
.“The food in Iceland was better than expected. From fish stew to hot dishes dogs lamb chops, fresh rye bread and skyr, I ate many delicious things there.
.“Indonesia has great food. Where I'm from, Indonesian food is unknown and it's hard to find an Indonesian restaurant. The food was a pleasant surprise.”
.“Puerto Rico. It's a tropical island, but ironically it was hard to find fresh fish. We ate a lot of pork and fried foods. I love visiting Puerto Rico. I've been there several times and I don't I've only had good trips, but the food game is over.
.“The food in the Netherlands was mediocre. I like some Dutch snacks and desserts, like stroopwafels, poffertjes and frikandel, but otherwise Dutch cuisine is among my favorites. Every time I go to the Netherlands, My favorite thing to eat is Indonesian cuisine.”
ten.“Bologna, Italy. This is the place to go for better-than-expected food. This should be the true gastronomic capital of Italy. Think: ragù tagliatelle, tortellini, lasagna and more.”
.“If Colombia had some of the best food in the world, that would just be unfair. The country has beautiful people and a diverse, beautiful country. If Colombia had food as good as Mexico, it should be dismantled by an antitrust lawsuit. That said, I didn't find the food horrible, just very mediocre.”
.“Georgia had amazing food. From khachapuri to wine, everything was amazing. I went there without knowing much about the cuisine, but after taking a cooking class at a local house and traveling the country, I came away so impressed that I started cooking Georgian dishes at home.”
.“Lima, Peru has the best cuisine. The city has many excellent restaurants, from some of the most acclaimed restaurants in the world to many small, casual gems. There is also excellent Chinese and Japanese cuisine.”
.“Poland. I was expecting the cuisine to be more like German cuisine (which I enjoy, but often find quite repetitive and unimaginative), but I was very pleasantly surprised by the Polish cuisine.”
.“The food in Dubai was better than expected. Dubai gets a lot of hate, but you'll find good food if you get away from the malls and fancy restaurants and go to where the local working class and immigrants live and eat. It “It's hard to find another city with so many diverse, unique and authentic options.”
.“The Irish food scene blew me away. Americans tend to think of Irish food as meat and potatoes, but I ate great Irish food that went way beyond the stereotypical dishes, and I I also ate some explosive international food.”
.“I was a little disappointed with the food in Morocco. I enjoyed the tagine and couscous, but it seemed like all the restaurants had little more than those two options, and they became boring.”
.“Belgium was a surprising gem for me. I had almost no expectations before this trip. I opted for beer, but ended up loving the tasty comfort food.”
.And finally: “Honestly, my partner and I were a little disappointed by the food in France. We tried a wide variety, from street food to some fine dining, and overall it was pretty…meh. It's true, we had also just been in Italy less than a week before, so maybe that had to do with our disappointment.”
