The Mandai Center will be developed on the site currently occupied by the Mandai Executive Golf Course at Upper Seletar Reservoir after its lease expires.
The center will potentially allow students to take part in water activities – subject to an environmental impact assessment – and host larger-scale camps run by uniformed groups, the Environment Ministry said.
Meanwhile, the Sembawang center will be developed at a site close to PAssion WaVe @ Sembawang.
This center will support water activities such as kayaking and outrigger canoeing, and allow uniformed groups to participate in land and sea expeditions, the environment ministry added.
The exact locations and development of the Mandai and Sembawang centers will be guided by environmental impact studies, which are expected to start next year.
Nature groups such as Nature Society (Singapore) and Singapore Youth Voices for Biodiversity were approached for the preliminary phase.
The Ministry of Education also stated that it will work closely with the National Parks Board (NParks), the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the national water agency PUB, while public feedback from stakeholders near the new centers will be taken into account.
