MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) – Nearly 100 million people in the United States will travel to their Thanksgiving destinations in 2024, with 79.9 million travelers on the roads and 18.3 million people are expected to be reviewed by the Transportation Security Administration during the peak travel period.
In Alabama, authorities are warning travelers to prepare.
Montgomery Regional Airport Executive Director Wade Davis said more people than ever are leaving the capital for Thanksgiving, so passengers should arrive at the airport early.
“Make sure you arrive early, two hours early. Be sure to check what's packed in your bag. Go to the TSA site and make sure you don’t have anything that shouldn’t be in the bag,” Davis said.
AAA Alabama recommends that drivers allow a little extra time to get to their destination as traffic congestion is expected on highways, adding that it may be best to drive outside of peak periods.
“If you're traveling to a place that normally takes you two hours, you probably want to give yourself at least three hours to get there. Maybe more than that,” said Clay Ingram, spokesman for AAA Alabama.
Ingram also suggests motorists inspect their cars before traveling to avoid breakdowns and blowouts during their journey.
