MACKINAC ISLAND, MI — In the fall, the unmistakable sound of carriage horses’ hooves is somewhat muffled by fallen leaves. And a cool breeze blows across the Sound. For these reasons and a million others, Michiganders aren’t the only ones who love Mackinac Island in the fall.
The island is celebrating another travel victory today after Named Second Best Fall Travel Destination by USA Today. The publication's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards asked travel enthusiasts to vote for their top places to visit in the fall. Last year, Mackinac Island ranked third. This year, it moves up a notch.
“This award is more than recognition; it is a reflection of the dedication our members demonstrate to making Mackinac Island a place that provides unforgettable memories,” said Tim Hygh, Executive Director of Tourism on Mackinac Island. “We are truly honored to be named one of the top fall destinations and are grateful to all of our guests for allowing us to be a part of their special moments on the island.
“As we celebrate this achievement, we are inspired to continue creating experiences that resonate with everyone who visits us in the years to come.”
The continued warmer weather has made it feel more like summer than fall in recent weeks. But Mackinac Island's unique location also means it's a “refreshing holiday destination” With light breezes coming off the Straits of Mackinac, daytime temperatures are more pleasant than on the mainland. There's a reason locals call fall “the perfect season” on Mackinac, tourism officials said.

The award is just the latest jewel in Mackinac's list of honors. The island was recently named #1 Best Summer Travel Destinations in 2024
When the awards were announced, Mackinac was edged out by Gatlinburg, Tennessee, for the top spot. Other cities in the top five included Estes Park, Colorado, and Lafayette, Louisiana. You can see all the winners on the website here.
