ROCHESTER, Minn. – The U.S. Transportation Security Administration expects this summer to be one of the busiest for air travel.
Jessica Mayle, regional TSA spokeswoman, said the Friday weekend before Memorial Day was one of the busiest on record.
By providing for long lines at airports, the TSA is reminding travelers what is not allowed on flights.
Mayle showed a collection of items held by TSA agents at Rochester International Airport that were mistakenly packed in carry-on bags or pocketed by busy travelers. Some of the prohibited items include a large hammer, several box cutters and pocket knives. She said these items should be packed in checked baggage and not carried on a plane.
Restrictions also remain in place for liquids. The TSA limits liquids to 3.4 ounces, with these containers packaged in a quart-sized clear bag. Exceptions are made for baby food and certain medications.
Airmen must always remove their shoes and have them x-rayed. People aged 75 and over are not required to remove their shoes.
Mayle said following TSA protocols will speed up security lines for travelers.
“We anticipate having several more record-breaking days this summer, so we just want travelers to be prepared for that. Give yourself plenty of time, pack smartly and it will make the checkpoint experience much smoother.” , Mayle said.
She recommends travelers arrive at their airport two hours before their flight. At a smaller airport like Rochester International Airport, 90 minutes should be enough.
