As popular destinations become crowded and their locals protest bad visitor behavior and “overtourism,” vacationers are increasingly looking to get off the beaten path.
Internet searches suggest next year's tourists will look to “detour destinations” such as Reims in France, Brescia in Italy and Waikato in New Zealand, according to travel site Expedia.
Another travel site, Booking.com, estimates that Trieste, Italy, Houston in the United States and Sanya – “China's Hawaii” – could be popular among vacationers.
More than half of people surveyed by Booking.com said they wanted to protect themselves from the sun and avoid “tourist traps.” Expedia says “the hunt for less traveled and lesser-known destinations” has people searching for new destinations as they plan for 2025.
