Istanbul, Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle have been named the top three airports in the world serving the most destinations, according to a study by aviation data analyst Cirium.
Cirium's list of the 20 most connected airports in the first half of 2024 revealed that Turkey's main hub, Istanbul, served 309 destinations, followed by Frankfurt with 296 routes and Paris CDG (282).
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol comes in fourth with 270 destinations, tied with Chicago O'Hare, the top gateway to the United States. The only other European airport in the top 10 is Rome Fiumicino (234 routes).
No UK airport features in the top 10, with London Heathrow dropping from eighth to 12th in 2023th This year, London Gatwick Airport serves 221 destinations, slightly more than London, with 218 destinations. Madrid, Munich and Barcelona airports also make the list.
Cirium's research shows that 10 of the 20 most connected airports are in Europe, four in China, four in the United States and two in the Middle East: Dubai International and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
