Millennials are redefining travel, from using social media and apps to plan vacations to researching trips. budget-friendly experiences that always manage to combine adventure and culture.
“Social media has created a high demand for photoshoots at locations like scenic waterfalls, food halls, etc.,” said Cody handtravel agent and legal strategist. “Think about the massive social media reach of chocolate covered strawberries in the London market. Additionally, COVID-19 has created a whole new travel philosophy where people can get away from it all while still having an experience.
GOBanking Rates spoke with Hand and others travel agents to discover cheap destinations millennials are heading towards.
Mexico
Many millennials are avoiding the crowds of Cancun, Los Cabos and Tulum in exchange for quieter beach towns like Puerto Escondido and Puerto Morelos.
“Not only are flights cheaper, especially in the low season – November to April – but hotels, all-inclusives and Airbnbs, are more affordable,” said Sebastian Garrido of Vibe Adventures. “Another recent trend we've seen among our customers is that they want to visit viral TikTok locations like Puerto Escondido, for example.”
Mexico City is also becoming popular with millennials because of its thriving food scene, walkable communities and affordable accommodations compared to higher-priced cities, said Justin Crabbe, CEO and travel expert at Thrown.
“Mexico City offers millennials a mix of world-class museums, sprawling markets, and a variety of innovative street food on a budget,” Crabbe explained.
Destin, Florida
Known for its Emerald Coast beaches, mild climate and beautiful golf courses, Destin has become popular with millennial travelers, according to Mercedes Zach, a travel agent at Tickets as soon as possibletold Yahoo Life.
“Many say Destin gives a Caribbean vibe without having to take a flight to one of the exotic islands outside the United States,” Zach said. “Plus, there are many exclusive beach rentals to choose from for as little as $100 per night. This city offers everything from golf and rock climbing to zip lines, snorkeling, kayaking, dolphin tours, and world-class festivals.
Zach also said a week-long trip to Destin for two people could cost between $3,000 and $3,400, including lodging, local transportation, restaurants and sightseeing. She said Destin is becoming a budget-friendly choice for millennials looking for a tropical vacation without leaving the United States.
Vietnam
Zach said his millennial customers are drawn to Vietnam for its bustling cities, such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, for the country's natural landscapes like Ha Long Bay, fishing villages and tropical islands.
“There’s something for everyone and every budget,” Zach said. “No matter where you go or what you do, Vietnam is known for its great value accommodation – from family-run guesthouses and secluded resorts to budget hostels and more upscale hotels in major cities, from $35 per night.”
Additionally, Vietnam's local culinary scene offers prices starting at $1 per meal.
“On average, a week-long trip to Vietnam for two people costs around $850, including accommodation, meals, local transportation and sightseeing,” Zach said.
Chattanooga and Nashville, Tennessee
Millennials are also attracted to Chattanooga. For its mix of culture, history and affordability, especially for travelers who want to avoid the crowds and higher costs of big cities.
“Chattanooga has a rejuvenated downtown with walking trails and plenty of art installations that appeal to millennials interested in a blend of nature and the city,” Crabbe said.
Nashville is also a popular choice for millennial travelers, depending on why they are going there, Hand said.
“It quickly became a go-to place for weekends and hen parties,” he said. “Additionally, some millennials tend to value less man-made experiences, like headlines and dinner theater, and more emphasis on natural beauty.”
