Five years later, China is once again facing a COVID-like situation and this time with its HMPV. If videos posted on social media are to be believed, the virus poses major health challenges, with a sharp increase in respiratory illnesses, including human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The number of infected people increases frequently. This clearly looks like a worrying situation and everyone is asking the same questions: Is it safe to travel to China right now?
Video circulating on social media shows hospitals and crematoria in China (apparently) flooded with patients, with reports of overcrowded medical facilities. In addition, in addition to HMPV, other viruses, including influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and even Covid-19, circulate simultaneously.
Online video posts are concerning. Some even suggest that the current viral outbreak is more complex than a single disease strain. The spread of multiple respiratory infections, including HMPV, has raised alarms as these viruses share similar symptoms, complicating diagnosis and treatment.
About human metapneumovirus (HMPV)
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that affects young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Its symptoms are similar to those of a cold or flu, including fever, cough and nasal congestion.
Hazards:
In severe cases, HMPV can lead to more serious conditions, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in young children under five and the elderly. Currently, there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment against the virus.
Prevention tips:
Wash hands with soap and water.
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
Avoid close contact with infected people.
India's verdict
In view of the current situation, the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), under the Union Health Ministry, is now monitoring respiratory diseases and seasonal flu cases across the country. The NCDC is also in communication with international health organizations, as reported by official sources. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation, verify information and provide updates as necessary.”
According to data from December 16 to 22, there was an increase in acute respiratory infections in China, including seasonal influenza, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and HMPV. Health authorities anticipate a seasonal increase in respiratory infections in the northern hemisphere, particularly during the winter months, according to the latest update from the World Health Organization's Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO).
Is it safe to travel to China?
For now, it would be premature to say anything. As of now, there is no update on this from the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Indian government.
