CORBIN, Ky. (LEX 18) — Who doesn't need to unplug every now and then?
A step back from everyday life to enjoy the world around us.
For 41 years, people have found escape at Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort.
“One of the things we really try to do here is make sure we have something for everyone. We can accommodate young children all the way to people who want more adventurous things,” said owner Dania Egedi.
Appearances are deceptive when you arrive at the main area of the complex.
Kayak and canoe rentals are prominently displayed in the visitor center (as you pass the zipline), but the adventure goes beyond that.
The Sheltowee Trace team is ready to take you on a journey to the wilderness.
From kayaking on the steady flow of the river to a boat trip under Cumberland Falls.
A complete experience that has evolved a lot since Dania's father started the resort decades ago.
“It’s a family business. My father started it many years ago. He passed away about two and a half years ago,” Egedi said.
“All of my siblings have worked here at one point or another. I really lean on a lot of my employees to do the things my dad used to do and we do it as a team.”
This family feeling becomes more apparent after a day or two spent in their cozy, super cozy cabins or covered wagons.
Everyone who works in the complex might as well share the same last name depending on how they interact with each other.
Dale Buhel will vouch for this sentiment.
The kayak and canoe guide joined the Sheltowee Trace team simply for a summer job.
That was seven years ago. He's still here.
“Just the fun of meeting new people. Being outside and not inside. All the technology and all that. It’s a great way to get out and get away,” Buhel said.
“As soon as you start working here, you realize that it’s a very family atmosphere. A lot of the people you work with consider themselves family. We’re really close here.”
Most of the people who work at the complex are also from the area.
As people from across the state, region and around the world stop at Sheltowee Trace, Egedi is proud to see how far her family has gone to provide a fun experience.
“Most people are very anxious and tense. After a day or two, they are much more relaxed, the children are running and playing,” Egedi said.
“They’re not stuck inside playing on their phones. I like to see that.”
