What is Black Friday?
The term “Black Friday” originated in the United States and occurs on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States. This signifies the start of the Christmas shopping season and as such it is marked by significant sales.
Over the years it has become a global event and is the biggest pre-Christmas event in the retail calendar.
“The event is renowned for delivering the biggest deals before Christmas and this year will be no different,” Australian Retailers Association (ARA) CEO Paul Zahra said. “We expect strong in-store and online traffic, with sales reaching $6.36 billion this year, an increase of $188 million in 2022,” he says.
Although called Black Friday, this sales frenzy lasts more than one day and includes the weekend (sometimes called Cyber Weekend) and the following Monday (Cyber Monday).
What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday occurs on the Monday after Black Friday. This year, it arrives on November 27. This is the last “official” day of Black Friday sales.
While some stores are offering new deals on Cyber Monday, most are maintaining their Black Friday deals to this day.
Are Black Friday deals a scam?
Black Friday is a major shopping event that offers incredible deals across the board. Are they too good to be true? Although most stores are reputable and their items are genuine, online scams do happen.
Here are some tips to avoid falling victim to a fraudulent site:
- Look for the lock: The lock symbol next to the URL in the URL bar means end-to-end encryption is enabled. This is a good sign that the site is secured by a digital certificate and is secure.
- Look at the URL: Fake or fraudulent URLs will not look correct. The URL may contain extra words or incorrect spelling.
- Look for the blue check mark: If you're selling through social media, make sure the account has a blue check mark next to it. This means that their account and identity have been verified.
- Question if the price is too good to be true: Deep discounts are one thing, but incredible discounts could mean the item is fake or the site isn't legitimate.
As for getting the best value on Black Friday? Here are some tips to make sure you don't get scammed:
- Start your wish list early: This way, you can see how much these items cost now to avoid overpaying or falling for a discount that really isn't quite that when Black Friday rolls around.
- Compare the prices: Hundreds of stores will have sales during Black Friday and the competition is strong. Before you buy, shop around to see if you can get a better deal.
- Know your budget: Delicious discounts are here to bring you to the store. Once there, it's quite easy to end up with more than you need in your basket. Set a budget and make a “wish” list to stick to it.
- Consider additional costs like shipping and currency conversion: These can easily blow your budget. Take this into account when shopping to reduce your costs.
