Have you ever explored charming small towns filled with unique attractions? Imagine pedaling or even just walking through picturesque landscapes and coming across whimsical bicycle sculptures scattered throughout the streets. Welcome to Oméoa hidden gem nestled in the heart of Victoria's High Country.
Welcome to Oméo
We recently visited Omeo, located in the high alpine country of Country Victoria (Australia). With its quaint shops, friendly locals and breathtaking scenery, it offers a unique experience for tourists of all types. Apparently the focus is on bikes. From leisurely walks along the Omeo River to challenging mountain climbs, there is something for everyone.
I think one of the nicest aspects of Omeo is its collection of original bicycle sculptures. These artistic creations, scattered throughout the city, add a touch of fantasy and creativity to the local landscape. Made from old bicycles, motorcycles, quads and wood. Adorned with pieces of clothing and accessories and even some abstract metal sculptures. Each piece tells a unique story about the city and its people. They even have their own Tour de France (or should I say Omeo?).
Someone, or maybe several people, had a hand in creating these bikes. And what a way to recycle all kinds of pieces thrown away by others. Truly wonderful to see.
Some of my favorite bicycle sculptures
- The family of spectators: This vibrant sculpture depicts a family of spectators with a baby and a dog
- The Ambo: A nod to nurses and doctors of the past, I'm sure. It's quaint and quirky and quite humorous
- The paparazzi: There are actually several. But this guy really caught my eye, hanging on the back of a quad, capturing the action shots.
As you explore Omeo, take the time to discover these hidden gems and appreciate the artistry and creativity behind each sculpture. These unique creations add a touch of magic to the city and make it a truly unforgettable destination. The best way to see these sculptures is on foot. The town is actually quite small, so it doesn't take too long, but is definitely worth exploring.
I went for a walk with my faithful Sony a7R V and my Tamron 28-75mm lens and captured as much as I could.
