“The Golden Route has become synonymous with the quintessential Japanese travel experience for many tourists. However, there is much more to Japan than the beaten path,” said Ken Toyoda, Executive Director of JNTO Toronto. “There are countless incredible destinations that have yet to be discovered by the average traveler. We saw an opportunity to introduce the world to these quieter, yet equally fascinating, regions of Japan.”
The Golden Route, a traditional itinerary beloved by first-time visitors, typically begins in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo and winds west through Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima before returning to the capital. The famous journey includes iconic experiences such as climbing Mount Fuji, riding the state-of-the-art shinkansen (bullet train), soaking in therapeutic onsen (hot springs) baths and staying at a traditional ryokan, a Japanese inn.

The release of JNTO’s new list is a testament to its commitment to showcasing the appeal of non-metropolitan and less-visited regions, encouraging travelers to discover the unexplored countryside.
