LORIS, SC (WMBF) – Certified travel agent offers advice following WMBF News investigation into three Grand Strand women vacation nightmares.
Scott Faust, Loris resident and owner of Destinations 24/7 Travel Services, has over 30 years of experience booking thousands of trips.
However, he said, after our story about several people losing hundreds of dollars by booking with the same travel agent ran, some of his clients even became concerned.
“I had gotten a few phone calls asking for quotes, but they had declined because they had seen the story,” Faust said. “So I had to assure them I was a serious travel agent.”
To reassure them and other travelers who may want to use a travel agent in the future, Faust shared these tips:
- Ask travel agents for their professional licenses
- Ask them if they are recognized as members of credible national organizations (e.g. ASTA, CLIA, IATAN)
- Always do your research and check reviews (even if you know the travel agency personally)
- Communication and responsiveness of travel agents are essential
- Choose an agent who specializes in the type of travel you want to book (eg. Cruises, international travel)
- Paying with a credit card is the best option in case of a dispute
Faust also said it's important to check where your money is going from your bank statements.
“When we charge your credit card, make sure the charge is coming from the vendor we use and not from the travel agency we belong to or own,” Faust said. “For us, the vendor we use is usually SouthWest Airlines or Pleasant Holidays, so you want that to be reflected on your bank statement. That way you know the money is actually going to your travel and not to someone’s personal pocket.”
Scott said there are several benefits to booking with a travel agent, including someone to take care of any issues that may arise, as well as tips, tricks and recommendations for your trip.
