DETROIT – The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations reminds travelers preparing for their Hajj pilgrimage to be aware of important travel advice to ensure a smooth return to the United States .
Travelers should familiarize themselves with current money reporting requirements and be prepared to declare all food and merchandise returning with them to the United States.
“Travelers must declare any currency in excess of $10,000 to CBP when entering or leaving the United States,” said Director of Field Operations Marty Raybon. “To ensure safe and efficient travel, it is essential that travelers tell the truth about any purchases made abroad and are prepared to accurately declare the goods they have and the amount of money they are carrying. “
Federal regulations prohibit the importation of certain items into the United States from foreign countries. All travelers entering the United States are required to declare meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, soil, animals, and plant and animal products (including soup or soup products) that they can transport. Banned agricultural products may harbor exotic plant pests and animal diseases that could seriously harm U.S. crops, livestock, and the environment – as well as an important sector of our nation's economy.
Failure to accurately report cash, food or merchandise could result in seizure, as well as possible civil and criminal penalties.
Travelers can save time and easily complete the Currency and Monetary Instruments Report onlinewithin 72 hours before your planned travel date.
If travelers have any concerns resulting from their inspection at the port of entry, a CBP supervisor is always available to answer their questions and address their concerns. As always, CBP is committed to treating all travelers with respect and dignity.
