Adventure WV and the Carruth Center are hosting their second annual summer bike ride series, “Grad Student Bike & Banter,” May 16-August 1.
Graduate students are invited to cycle every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The event was inspired by the Carruth Center's desire to connect students outside of the clinical setting, according to program facilitator Haley Slagle.
“We have many graduate students right now who report feeling lonely and are looking for connection. And I think it’s a really good way to meet people without having to sit and stare at someone,” she said.
During the event, students will meet at Morgantown Adventure Outfitters, where they will receive a bike and helmet. The group usually takes one of three trails: along the Monongahela River, toward Point Marion or the Deckers Creek Trail, according to Slagle.
“Democracy determines the path we want to take,” she said.
No cycling skill level is required or expected to participate.
“Since you’ve ridden a bike before, you’ll be fine.” It’s all flat and paved,” Slagle said.
This event is open to all graduate students and “family” walks will take place on May 30, June 27 and August 1.
The only required fee is $5, which students will pay upon registration but will be refunded once they attend, according to Slagle.
Slagle said the event is important because it can help graduating students feel less alone.
“The first thing we try to do is help people who are suffering from loneliness and help them understand that they are not alone,” Slagle said. “I hope people find friendships through this.”
