When you think of video game magic, you probably think first of the most destructive tools. Skyrim, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate 3 – blast your enemies with fireballs and lighting to solve your problems. But I've always had a penchant for more nuanced spells, like the Axii Sign from The Witcher and the DnD Command spell seen in BG3. So I'm very intrigued by the new indie adventure game Windy Islandwhich is currently being presented at WASD Live 2024 and aims to use your powers in the service of a more peaceful life.
“In the world of Windy Islandwe don’t kill animals, we don’t fight, we don’t fight,” says Parity Games producer Anna Birna Turner about the new adventure game. Set on the titular island, you play as Brynhildur, a guardian of balance facing a sudden uprising of chaos. “Our aim here is therefore not to cause harm or harm, but to restore the calm and peace that existed before the events of the match.”
The Guardians of Balance are “a cross between a witch and a wizard who protect the balance of the natural world.” After Brynhildur's ancestral home of Dreitill is devastated by a mysterious force and her friend Hrymja disappears, she is visited by the ghost of Margrét, the first of the Balance Guardians, who warns that the balance of nature is becoming uncontrollable. “Chaos springs from open wounds and you must seek the source,” she notes.
To help restore this balance, Brynhildur uses several magical spells, each with multiple uses. Viska helps you track down the white raven who serves as your guide, but can also be used as an aid in solving puzzles or uncovering hidden messages. Hugga is a healing spell that can dispel curses and remove charred abscesses on the field, but it will also calm enemies to prevent them from attacking you, clear minds, and diffuse tense situations.
As the story progresses, Brynhildur discovers her third power – Stunga, a destructive force whose use was previously forbidden and sealed away. It can be used to stun creatures or break obstacles in your path, but it's always best to avoid larger, more aggressive threats such as trolls if possible. “It's been a long time since it's been needed on the Isle of Winds,” Turner remarks, “so the fact that Brynhildur is removing it indicates that something is seriously wrong.”
Island of Winds is expected to arrive in 2025. If you are as fascinated as I am by its captivating atmosphere and the beautiful traditional Icelandic architecture of its setting, you can add it to your wishlist on Steam to stay up to date with developments.
