When we're not outdoors, we get our adventure fix by exploring social media and the web. Here are some of the best adventure links we discovered this week.
Global Nomad Games: In September, the fifth World Nomad Games began in Kazakhstan. It features traditional sports played throughout Central Asia, including kokpar (horse rugby), eagle hunting and horse wrestling.
It is also a celebration of traditional clothing, food and culture. It takes place every two years and, just like the Olympics, its location changes. This year's event kicked off on September 8, when 3,000 athletes from 89 countries descended on Astana's main arena.
It's FKT season: As summer gives way to fall and cool weather replaces sweltering heat, conditions improve for those looking to beat the fastest time known. Over the past few weeks, runners have beaten many American FKTs on the Colorado Trail, Appalachian Trail and others. Here is an overview of the five most famous recent eras.
Last of the Fire Watchers
Last of the lookouts: Bart Vanderline is the last regular fire lookout in British Columbia. Now 71, he stands at the Sinkut fire watch station, watching for the signs he knows all too well.
His first summer job 52 years ago was as a fire lookout. He then became a forest ranger. Now retired, Vanderline is back where it all began. There were once 300 fire watch stations in British Columbia, but as technology has replaced them, there is only one left.
Sport climbing in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Bosnia and Herzegovina is often overlooked as a climbing destination, but its high-quality limestone deserves a place on any list of sport climbing destinations. This mini-guide highlights some of the biggest rocks to tackle.
Canoeing the Yukon and saved by a bucket
Yukon challenges: The traditional Yukon River route stretches 715 km from Whitehorse to Dawson City. Emy Mcleod had wanted to paddle for years when she saw an advert seeking a second guide to lead a charity expedition. Some team members had never been in a canoe before and were preparing to spend 11 days on the river, sometimes traveling more than 80 km per day.
Kayaker survives by clinging to a bucket: A kayaker was stranded in Lake Erie overnight for more than 12 hours. His kayak filled with water and floated away, leaving him clinging to a bucket.
How to climb new lines
Tips for climbing new lines: Luka Lindic is an expert in traditional rock, steep ice and mixed terrain. Anthony Walsh went to hear him speak and realized that Lindic's advice was perfect for any climber, not just those looking to make their first ascents. Here is a summary of his best advice.
New FKT on Grand Teton rejected: Mountain runner Michelino Sunseri crossed the Grand Teton in record time. He climbed and descended the 4,198m peak in two hours, 50 minutes and 50 seconds. This was more than two minutes faster than Kilian Jornet's previous FKT. However, the FKT authority disqualified his attempt because Sunseri deviated from the standard route to avoid hikers on the trail.
