When we're not outdoors, we're finding adventure by exploring social media and the web. Here are some of the best adventure links we discovered this week.
Climbers paddle into winter wonderland: In January, a cold snap created a wondrous ice landscape in Squamish, British Columbia. Adventure photographer Jimmy Martinello spotted the incredible ice landscape while hiking and immediately assembled a team of ice climbers.
Climbing Germany's highest mountain in Birkenstocks:A viral video shared by a German mountain guide shows an unidentified tourist climbing the Zugspitze in Birkenstocks. Even though he probably rode a cable car for most of the way, climbing the route in sandals is irresponsible.
This follows reports that a Chinese climber attempted to reach the summit of The Matterhorn without suitable equipment Just a few weeks ago. Two incredible examples of what not to do in the mountains.
The rules of hiking
Does your hike count if you miss a few miles?:Hitchhiking, taking a taxi, or deviating from the route for a few miles is relatively common on a full hike. A detour can leave some hikers feeling disappointed, as if they didn't really complete their route.
Mary Skylis and Michael Brekkie hiked the Appalachian Trail together in 2015. One is a purist who believes that missing a few miles on your trail degrades its integrity. The other sees the official route as a guide rather than a strict map to follow.
The World's Most Amazing Tiny Hotel Rooms: The world's first capsule hotel opened in Osaka, Japan in 1979. Over time, tiny hotel rooms have multiplied. From a sleeping pod suspended from the side of a cliff to a nook between bookshelves, this list contains eight of the most extraordinary miniature hotel rooms you can find.
Flash floods in the Grand Canyon
Hiker dies after flash floods hit Grand Canyon:Heavy rains flooded sections of Grand Canyon National Park, killing one hiker and injuring several others. Chenoa Nickerson's body was found 20 miles from where she disappeared, at mile marker 286 of the Colorado River, by a rafting group.
More than 100 tourists had to be rescued as flooding devastated campsites and hiking trails. People on the trails said the relatively calm morning had turned into a life-or-death situation.
Bikepacking on Norway's best gravel trails: Josh Reid and his cycling partner take on the “Of Milk and Navvies” bikepacking route in Norway. The 383km route combines two of the country’s most popular gravel bike routes: Mjolkevegen (the Milk Road) and Rallarvegen (the Navvies Road). The duo traverses valleys, mountain passes and cattle pastures before finishing their ride at one of Norway’s longest fjords.
The end of a climbing career
Alannah Yip's career hasn't been perfect. And that's okay: Alannah Yip is one of Canada's most successful competitive climbers. She was the only female climber on the Tokyo Olympic team, but she didn't make the cut for Paris. Here, she talks about everything that happened in between: losing funding, changing coaches, living with alopecia, and falling in love with competitive climbing.
Man Abandoned by Colleagues on Hiking Retreat: A group of 15 colleagues on a hiking retreat in Colorado split into two groups. One hiked to the summit of Mount Shavano, the other hiked to the saddle. For some reason, one man was left behind. He reached the summit alone but got lost on the way down. A storm blew up and he had to battle icy winds and rain. At 9 p.m., a search and rescue team set out to try to find him.
