According to AAA booking data, two travel categories are seeing increased demand compared to last year: flights and cruises. Domestic flight bookings are up 1% and international flight bookings are up 3%. Domestic cruise bookings are up 19% compared to last fall, and international cruise bookings are up 6%.
“Mild temperatures aren’t the only benefit of fall travel,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Now that students are back in school full-time, fall travelers often enjoy smaller crowds and lower prices. That’s why fall can be a great time to travel abroad, especially to Europe.”

Travelers are paying about the same as last fall. The average domestic roundtrip ticket is $660, and the average international roundtrip ticket is $1,315. The average cost of a cruise departing from domestic cities is similar to last fall — $2,355 — while the average cost of international cruises is up 1 percent to $3,560.
“Fall travel remains an investment that should be protected with travel insurance,” Haas said. “A proper insurance policy can provide medical coverage for international travel and financial benefits for lost or delayed baggage, flight cancellations and flight delays of just three hours.
