OREGON — The American Automobile Association predicts that more than 119 million people will travel more than 50 miles during the holiday season, making it one of the busiest times of the year for road travel. As winter sets in in Oregon, drivers should be aware of how cold temperatures can affect their tires.
All-season tires begin to lose grip below 45 degrees, and for every 10 degrees drop in temperature, tire pressure drops by 1 PSI, which can reduce grip on the road. In snowy and icy conditions, winter tires provide up to 50% more traction than all-season tires, improving safety during the winter months.
It is also important to regularly check the tire tread depth. An easy way to do this is with a penny: if you see Lincoln's face, it's time to replace the tires. Staying on top of tire maintenance is essential for safer driving during the colder months.
