Tips for driving in winter:
- Stay home: If travel is not necessary, avoid driving in winter conditions.
- Check conditions: Use resources like MDOT's ChartWeb or Virginia's 511 site for up-to-date traffic and weather information.
- Drive slowly: Allow extra time to accelerate, brake and turn on icy roads.
- Dealing with a skid: If you lose traction and start to spin or skid on snow or ice, do not apply the brakes suddenly. Steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go, until your tires regain grip.
- Increase following distance: Allow 8-10 seconds between vehicles to ensure sufficient stopping distance.
- Know your brakes: apply steady, firm pressure to avoid skidding.
- Handle slopes carefully: gain momentum before slopes and avoid stopping on slopes.
For those who must drive, a well-stocked emergency kit can be essential. Essential items include a charged cell phone, blankets, flashlight, ice scraper, food, water, and items like sand or cat litter for traction.
Winter preparation reminder:
This storm serves as a reminder to prepare for future winter events. AAA Mid-Atlantic emphasizes the importance of being prepared, recalling the January 2022 storm that stranded drivers on I-95 in Virginia for 18 hours. Drivers and passengers spent hours stuck in their cars along a 50-mile stretch of the highway as temperatures fell below freezing overnight. “Those who had well-stocked emergency kits, including water and non-perishable snacks, as well as blankets and coats, were in better shape than those who were unprepared,” Ali says.
