T scrolling is more than likely on many of our to-do lists. However, as a student, juggling rent, the cost of Rootes snacks, and the exorbitant price of the bus pass doesn't always make this possible. That doesn't mean traveling the world should be off limits for 2024. As I'm sure many of us are hoping to travel more this year, sometimes we just need some good advice when Student Finance just isn't enough.
1. There is much more to the world than Paris:
So, have you decided to travel? but the first hurdle is deciding where to go. When traveling on a budget, don't always head to the most well-known and touristy areas. Not only will you avoid tourist traps and overpriced “local specialties”, but a less touristy area means a more authentic experience, cheaper prices and a chance to live like the locals.
2. Discover the world out of season:
This may be a more obvious tip, but if you're traveling on a budget, low season is your new best friend. You'll avoid crowded streets, long queues and holiday prices. It seems that reading week has more than one use!
3. Avoid planning and costs:
Planning a trip on a budget isn't easy. You need to consider flights, accommodation, how you will spend your time, where you will eat… the list goes on. Apps like Lucky trip are perfect for this. You can set your preferences and it will find you a destination, flights and activities at an extremely reasonable price. During my first year at university, my friend and I booked an impulsive trip through the app and ended up a few days later in the most beautiful city in eastern Spain.
4. Yes, 10 pairs of socks are enough for a weekend:
Your trip is booked. Your accommodation is sorted. All that's left is the dreaded packaging. This is what I hate most about traveling. If you're traveling abroad for a short trip, don't break the bank on a large suitcase. A carry-on bag will, most of the time, provide enough space. Plus, if you're traveling with friends, who doesn't love sharing outfits! Rolling clothes rather than folding them is also a great way to save space. Packing lightly is something I learned to do after taking a full-size suitcase on a weekend trip…twice.
5. A cheap route:
You have planned your vacation and arrived at your destination. Now you might be asking yourself “what is there to do?” “. Many places will offer a wide variety of free activities. This can vary from museums and galleries to cloud viewpoints and ancient ruins. Be sure to do your research before arriving so you don't miss anything. This will make it much easier to find these hidden gems without having to pay a fortune. Tic Tacand my (controversial) personal preference, Instagram Reels are great ways to find inspiration for an inexpensive itinerary.
6. The benefits of being a student at Warwick:
While some activities may be free, others will require payment. Don't worry, our student cards have been specially designed for this purpose! You can often get discounts or even get to places for free if you show your student ID. So make sure you add your Warwick student ID to your packing list. Who knew the best thing about being a student at Warwick would be the student ID?
7. Travel in style (a little):
When choosing a destination, it is good to consider the distance between places such as the airport, accommodation and the city center. This way, you won't have to spend a lot of money on transportation (which can often be the most expensive part of a vacation) and you can ensure that your time is spent exploring, not traveling. However, if you must use transportation, look for travel deals such as 24/72-hour travel cards. This can be cheaper and ensure you don't miss out on anything.
8. Glass or pitcher:
Finally, for those who like to enjoy a cold drink on the go, this tip is for you! Buying drinks in a restaurant or bar can get expensive, so why not buy a bottle of the local specialty and enjoy it with a nice view and a few friends. One of my favorite parts of my trip to Barcelona was sharing a bottle of sangria outside the hostel with friends. However, when in doubt, a pitcher is always better than a glass!
