When you think of summer vacations, your mind may instinctively conjure up sandy, salty beaches or snow-capped mountain peaks, because these destinations are out of reach in the Midwest. However, if you're looking to save a little money this summer or simply want to explore more of what makes the center of the country so special, you don't have to go far to get away from it all.
WorldAtlas, an online geography and travel resource, often publishes lists of underrated and scenic destinations in Missouri and its regions, like the Ozarks. The Tribune has gone through the various lists and compiled the places to visit for a day trip or a weekend trip.
While WorldAtlas already notes that Colombia is one of them if its six most underrated towns in Missouri, all the destinations listed are located outside the city, although some are nearby. WorldAtlas considers Columbia a hidden gem for recreationists because of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park as well as cave structures in the park like Devil's Icebox.
Rocheport, Boonville and Arrow Rock
Distances from Colombia: 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes respectively
WorldAtlas rates Rocheport as one of the seven most underrated cities to visit in 2024 and among the seven most picturesque towns in Missouri. It continues to be a hub for those biking the 240-mile Katy Trail, including along the Missouri River. The downtown historic district is great for admiring 1830s homes, and for those wanting to “go deeper into nature,” there’s the nearby Diana Bend Conservation Area.
Boonville is considered one of the six most underrated towns in Missouri, among the six most neglected cities and seven most scenic towns in Missouri by WorldAtlas. The city has many historical claims dating back to the American Civil War that history buffs can explore. There's also the bustling downtown, several parks, stunning views of the Missouri River, and the Isle of Capri Casino for those looking for a game of chance.
Arrow Rock, according to WorldAtlas, is among the most picturesque towns in Missouri. Its ties to history, including the explorations of Lewis and Clark, make Arrow Rock a good destination for a day trip.
“The compact downtown is ideal for walking tours and contains several cute shops, restaurants, and B&Bs, as well as museums focused on black history, printing, and more,” notes WorldAtlas.
There's also the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theater, which opens its 2024 season on June 7 with “42nd Street.” Other shows in 2024 are “Jimmy Buffet's Escape to Margaritaville”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl”, Noises Off, “Moriarty by Ken Ludwig: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure”, “Million Dollar Quartet” and the 10th anniversary presentation of “Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol.”

Another area favorite is Maramec Spring Park, which offers opportunities for fishing, hiking, camping and more.

Nearly every corner of this neglected town along historic Route 66 is Instagram-worthy, according to WorldAtlas. A highlight is the annual Crawford County Fair in July. The Wagon Wheel Motel is the oldest still operating motel on Route 66, located in Cuba. Many public murals and other locations for local food and souvenirs are available.

Distance from Colombia: about 2 hours.
Looking for a chance to see bald eagles in one of Missouri's most picturesque towns? Then visit Clarksville, about an hour north of St. Louis along the Mississippi River in Pike County, WorldAtlas says. The small town of 400 residents is home to a variety of historic buildings, antique stores and craft boutiques. Bald eagles can be seen in the city's Riverfront Park.

Distance from Colombia: a little over 2 hours.
Parkville, just minutes from downtown Kansas City in Platte County, is often overlooked and underappreciated and is among the most picturesque towns in the state, according to WorldAtlas. The small college town is also among the recommended places to visit in 2024. There are a series of parks along the Missouri River, old architecture to admire, and plenty of trails. On the way to Parkville, it might also be a good idea to make a stop at Blue Springs, another underrated Missouri town, which features Jacomo Lake, Blue Springs Lake, Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area, and shopping along Coronado Drive at Adams Dairy Parkway.
