BOISE, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) – With fall just around the corner, cooler weather brings exciting travel opportunities.
“For empty nesters or those with flexible work schedules, this is a great time to see the sights without the crowds,” said Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “There’s definitely a lull between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, and travelers can take advantage of that.”
According to AAA data, domestic travel bookings for September and October are down 7% from last year, despite the cost of travel falling 3% from last year.
“We had such strong numbers for Memorial Day and July 4 that some travelers may hit pause this fall,” Conde said. “But if you’re planning a spontaneous getaway, there are a few factors that can work in your favor.”
Domestic airfares remained about the same as a year ago, averaging $660 per round-trip ticket, and bookings were up 1%. Hotel bookings were up 13%, while car rentals were down 6% and the cost of renting a car was down 5%.
International flights increased by about 3%, with an average price of $1,315 per round-trip ticket, the same as a year ago. Hotel bookings increased by 6%, while travel bookings decreased by 14 to 15%, but costs increased by 1 to 2%.
Domestic and international cruises are up 19% and 6% respectively, with average costs similar to last year.
“Some travelers will also be looking for a little adventure on the Oregon coast, in Denver, Billings and Butte, Montana, or in nearby national parks,” Conde said. “With gas prices averaging 50 or 60 cents per gallon cheaper than they were a year ago, it’s certainly going to be a tempting trip as long as the weather permits.”
AAA’s fall travel tips include planning for sudden temperature changes, replacing windshield wipers, finding the best places to see fall foliage and spotting wildlife on backcountry trips. Also, check out fall festivals in the area and be sure to book the first flight out in the morning if you can—planes are usually on time with fewer delays since they’re already on the ground.
