Wisconsin (WJFW)- While some schools have already resumed classes, others will not start again until Labor Day weekend. Domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is up 9% from last year, while the cost of domestic travel fell 2%. Gas prices are always a concern for travelers and this year They are lower at $3.23 for a regular gallon, than they were at the same time last year at $3.57.
“Prices throughout the summer have been up and down based on some of the refinery issues we’ve seen in the Midwest, but overall they’re lower than they were this time last month, they’re lower than they were this time last year,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs at AAA.
Jarmusz also adds that travelers should plan their departure in advance due to the potential for increased traffic on Thursday and Friday.
“The best time to hit the road is going to be in the morning, pretty much any day of the weekend. The hours before noon are going to be best. Traffic is going to be heavier in the mid- to late afternoon, into the early evening, especially Thursday and Friday. That’s when we expect traffic to be the heaviest,” Jarmusz said.
Drivers are reminded to be courteous to emergency responders and roadside assistance workers who may be on the road assisting those in need.
“Don’t drive impaired, don’t be distracted, slow down. We’ve seen a big increase in speed-related crashes over the last few years, so we encourage everyone to watch their speed and be aware of emergency responders who will still be out and about throughout the weekend,” Jarmusz said.
