You may be in the mood for a last-minute trip this holiday weekend. Finding great deals this Labor Day season may seem like a stretch, but Melissa Lambarena, personal finance expert at Nerdwallet, tells NBC 7 that it's possible.
“There are many ways to do business if you’re willing to do the research, put in the effort and make sure you stick to your budget,” Lambarena said. “That’s essential, especially if you have different financial goals or are focused on paying off debt.”
According to AAA, a significant percentage of Americans will be traveling this holiday weekend, either within the U.S. or abroad. Overall, domestic travel bookings are up 9% from last year. Travelers should check out third-party websites to find hotel deals, some of which offer mystery deals if you're willing to be flexible or spontaneous.
If you're getting ready to hit the road, there are certain days and times you should plan to begin your trip.
“You want to leave Thursday or Friday morning, or Saturday afternoon, and come back Sunday possibly,” Lambarena said.
Travelers can also contact short-term rentals or hotels to see if they are willing to offer a discount for last-minute bookings as they try to get that reservation confirmed as well.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that gas prices are expected to be lower than last year this time around. According to AAA, the statewide average at the same time last year was 64 cents higher than this week’s local average of $4.59. Gas prices have remained steady in recent weeks.
Some of the top local destinations for Labor Day include Anaheim, the Grand Canyon and the Central Coast.
