The U.S. State Department issued a global alert late last week for all Americans traveling outside the country.
In the alert issued May 17, the department warned U.S. citizens traveling abroad to “exercise increased caution” due to the possibility of “terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.”
The department said in particular that it was “aware of the heightened risk of violence inspired by foreign terrorist organizations against LGBTQI+ individuals and events and advises U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased caution.”
Travelers to foreign countries are advised to remain vigilant in high-tourism locations, “including Pride celebrations and locations frequented by LGBTQI+ people.”
The State Department also encourages travelers to enroll in its Smart Traveler Enrollment program, which provides travel information and alerts and can make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
He also recommends following the department on Facebook And X for the latest updates.
