Visiting Iceland is on many people’s bucket lists. Its stunning landscapes include 32 active volcanoes, countless fjords and glaciers, and many naturally formed geothermal spas. Add in the chance to see the Northern Lights or enjoy a bowl of Plokkfiskur (fish stew), and you’ve got yourself a real an unforgettable holiday.
However, a trip to Iceland doesn't come cheap. If that sounds a bit pricey, some alternative cities offer many of the same benefits as an Iceland vacation for less.
Rovaniemi, Finland

Located in northern Finnish Lapland, Rovaniemi is the perfect place to escape to the Arctic. Dubbed the “official hometown of Santa Claus,” Rovaniemi attracts many tourists hoping to spend their holidays with Santa and his elves.
But Rovaniemi is not just a Christmas destination. It also offers plenty of Arctic activities, including tours to see the Northern Lights and the chance to try dog sledding with Finnish huskies.
If hiking is your thing, check out the Arctic Circle Hiking Area, which offers well-marked trails along stunning scenery, including rapids.
Bergen, Norway

Bergen is Norway's second largest city and is a great option for tourists looking for a gateway to the country's stunning fjord landscapes.
You can visit the historic district of Bryggen, a small village of colorful terraced houses, also a World Heritage Site. You can also take the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen, which offers stunning views of the city and many hiking trails.
Don’t forget to stop by Bergen’s historic fish market, which opened in the 13th century and is still a popular meeting place. The market is home to several restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day.
Oslo, Norway

For those looking for a deep dive into Viking history, Oslo is a great alternative to Iceland.
You can start your trip with a visit to the Midgard Viking Centre, which houses several exhibits of Viking artifacts and reproduces one of the most magnificent Viking halls known. At the Slottsfjells Museum, you can see a real Viking ship known as the Klastad. You can also explore an urban Viking settlement at Kaupang Viking Town.

Kiruna, Sweden

Kiruna is the northernmost city in Sweden. With only 22,000 inhabitants, you will be in the heart of the arctic nature, with its majestic mountains, blue glaciers and numerous lakes.
The city's location allows visitors to enjoy the midnight sun or polar nights, depending on when they visit. It is an ideal place to observe the Northern Lights when they are visible in autumn, winter or early spring.
The more adventurous can try snowmobiling in the arctic tundra or ice climbing near Camp Ripan.
Punta Arenas, Chile

Chilean Patagonia offers similar experiences to those you'll find in Iceland, including whale watching tours and stunning scenery. Base yourself in Punta Arenas and you'll be close to many attractions.
Just a few hours’ drive from Punta Arenas is Torres del Paine National Park, home to the famous five-day W Trek that takes you through epic mountains, beautiful ice-blue lakes, and stunning glaciers. Other attractions include king penguin colonies and ancient shipwrecks from when pirates and traders used the Strait of Magellan as a primary transportation route.
Glencoe, Scotland, United Kingdom

Glencoe is located in the middle of the Scottish Highlands and offers spectacular scenery at every turn. There are several beautiful hiking spots here, including the Three Sisters viewpoint, Hidden Valley and Buachaille Etive Mòr. If you're renting a car, take Glen Etive Road, where part of the James Bond movie “Skyfall” was filmed. You'll see many mountains and valleys that wouldn't be out of place on Iceland's famous Ring Road.
